Yuda Foundation's connection with Legacy School in San Martin Jilotepeque, in Chimaltenango, Guatemala, give us a good base to perform service projects with several local contacts to make and secure all the arrangements. During our humanitarian trips, we perform 2 types of service projects.
|
The first type of project we perform is a "hands on" or work project, where we work along side students from Legacy School who are being educated through the sponsorship program. This gives these students an opportunity to "give back" for the assistance they have received and teaches them leadership skills and civic responsibility. Working along side these kids is an amazing and unifying experience. In the fall of 2008, we sanded and painted a wrought iron fence around San Martin's only medical clinic. We also cleaned and beautified the facility on the outside. To read an interview with the director of the facility about this project, please CLICK HERE. |

The second service project is a food and clothing project. Clothing collected in the US, usually through Eagle Scout Projects, is taken to Guatemala by those participating in the humanitarian trip. These clothes are separated into piles according to size and gender. At the same time food purchased in bulk is separated into smaller packages. Boxes are then prepared for preselected families, based on need. A box is filled for each family with approximately a months worth of food, and an outfit for each person in the family. Some of these boxes are delivered to the families by our group, others are picked up by families who come to Legacy School during the project time. |
